Mike Province

Vietnam | E Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines

Marine Mike Province feels lucky that he had a loving family to welcome him home from Vietnam. He knows there were many who had a much different experience. Everyone who served there in any year is worthy of remembrance to him. He only wishes the lessons of Vietnam could have provided more guidance for the wars of today. (4:02)
Mike Schlitz

Operation Iraqi Freedom | 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division

Growing up, Mike Schlitz knew that he needed the discipline that being in the military would provide. After he joined up, he knew he had the drive to succeed in the military and move up the ranks. (5:26)
Right after 9/11, Mike Schlitz remembers the sentiment of excitement among some in the military around going to war. Once they shipped over to Iraq, they went to a special school to learn how to deal with the Iraqi Police and Iraqi Army. (6:14)
Working with the Iraqi Army was difficult because they didn't have the same sense of nationalism as American troops. As the war went on, it got increasingly difficult, especially as the casualties started to mount. (4:28)

Mike Schlitz tells of his time going back to Iraq the 3 times after his injury and how it helped him through the healing process. He defines what a hero means to him and the impact that his mentors have had on his life. (5:27)

Mike Waugh

Vietnam | 101st Airborne Division

His father was career Army, sent to Saigon in 1954 as part of the initial effort to aid the South Vietnamese after the French withdrew. Mike Waugh noticed as the war heated up all through his college years and when he took an ROTC commission after graduation, he knew he would be going. He got his first choice of assignments, the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell. (5:42)
Mike Waugh came into Vietnam as a replacement, like so many others. Assigned to an artillery battery as a forward observer, he was immediately sent to assist a MIKE Strike Force, which was Special Forces and Montagnard militia. The enemy never materialized and he learned how the elite troops overcame boredom in the field. (5:15)
On his thirty day foray into the field with the Special Forces, Mike Waugh thought he would be in a hot area, but it was quiet. The Montagnards on the operation supplemented the C-rations with some delicious food and, when they returned to Pleiku, he was invited to dinner with their commander. (4:12)
