He was in his last year of college pursuing a mechanical engineering degree when Bob DeBoo was drafted into the Navy. They sent him to finish his degree, then to midshipmen's school, and then he was ready to deploy. When he got to Pearl Harbor in 1945, though, the war had wound down and his ship was sent home and he was discharged into the reserve. (3:21)

As an engineering officer on an LSM, which stands for Landing Ship, Medium, Bob DeBoo was responsible for all mechanical operations on the ship. It was a flat-bottomed vessel, so it rolled mercilessly in whne the water got rough. While he was in the reserve, between the wars, he got a taste of life on the bigger ships. (4:30)

Recalled from the reserve for Korea, engineering officer Bob DeBoo was assigned to LST 803, another amphibious assault ship. The crew's first task was ferrying prisoners, then they performed general duties, sometimes in bone chilling sub-zero weather. (6:12)

While serving on an LST off the coast of Korea, engineering officer Bob DeBoo was entertained by a dog someone had smuggled on board as a pet. He was less amused by Inchon Charlie, piloting a North Korean biplane that would harass the ships. What nearly did the ship in, however, was a typhoon. (5:15)

At the age of sixteen, Bob Humphery was already in the National Guard and as soon as he was old enough, he went into the Army. At boot camp, he was getting tired on the long marches so he came up with a plan to lighten his load. He was pulling good duty occupying Japan when his unit was called for Korea and soon he was an expert at climbing hills. (5:58)

Attack and counter attack. Bob Humphery describes two of the see-saw battles in Korea, The Schoolhouse and The Bowling Alley. He remembers wave after wave of Chinese when they joined the fight, many of them unarmed. When he found himself fleeing under fire, there was one thought in his mind, "What would a rabbit do?" During the early part of the Korean War, Bob Humphery's unit drove all the way to Manchuria and occupied Pyongyang, now the North Korean capital. He was amused at being drilled extensively on using boats for river crossing, then using a footbridge when the time came. Since he never took R&R, he was among the first Americans to return home. He joined the Army on a lark and trained in a tank outfit. Then, Bob Jewitt got a surprise when the Korean War broke out and he was on his way across the Pacific. As he disembarked, there was one thing that astounded him, something not even his farming background could match. He got another surprise at the barracks when he looked around for the latrine. In his Korean War tank outfit, Bob Jewitt met a soldier named Peter Isabella. On the ship, the World War II veteran told funny stories and also remarked that he felt he would not return from this fight. Bob dismissed that talk and began to learn what combat was all about as he got shot at and responded in kind, answering a question he had posed to himself. Part 1 of 2. (8:17)

The explosion in the tank happened in a second and Bob Jewitt didn't even know what just happened. "Get the hell out of here!" came the order, but first, under fire, he pulled another crew member from the forward hatch and dragged him to safety under the tank. But there was one more crew member.
