When it was time to act, Bill Minnich came through. On a night watch, as he caught sight of a Chinese patrol, the only question was, rifle or grenade? When the unit was pinned down and no one responded to the order to move out, he cussed them all out and charged forward. And when he fell wounded, it was a sure thing that he would get up and scramble through the bullets landing at his feet. (8:38)

Bill Minnich recovered from a bullet to the shoulder and returned to action in Korea. It was a lot less action, but he learned that the Army radios must weigh at least three hundred pounds. He learned what fertilizer was used on the rice paddies, and he learned a lot about the spirit of the Korean people when he was sent to stop a POW riot. (4:40)

Bill Morris

Farm boy Bill Morris joined the Air Force Reserve, thinking it would keep him away from Korea, but his tests showed such great mechanical ability that the Army drafted him right out of the Air Force into the Army. They needed maintenance personnel for armored units in Germany, so he never saw Korea, after all. (8:35)

His job was to keep the tanks going in Cold War Germany and he did just that, including going to school just on turrets. Bill Morris recalls that school in the foothills of the Swiss Alps and also remembers the all night engine overhauls on the mighty tanks. There was even some excitement when he made a wrong turn and drove his maintenance truck into East Berlin. (7:15)

Bill Ozmint

Bill Ozmint remembers his upbringing in rural South Carolina and joining the ROTC during college, which got him introduced to the military. Since he knew so many people involved in the war, joining the military was always on the table for him. (4:31)

When he was stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia, Bill Ozmint was stationed on the 38th Parallel in Korea for a year. Being along the DMZ was difficult as you had to act carefully to remain safe from enemy fire. (6:15)
