As a 20 year old sailor, Lyle Bercier had survived an adventure in a small boat on the open sea, when men from the USS Quail fled the Philippines rather than surrender. Safely ashore in Australia, the Navy tested his mettle in different ways. (This interview made possible with the support of COL ROBERT W. Lyman Taylor

Thanks to ROTC, Lyman Taylor already knew how to drill when he got to Navy boot camp in 1943. When he was done there, he was assigned to a specialty school where he learned cryptography. The discipline was so new, he was classified as an electrician, right down to the shoulder patch. (5:34)

When Lyman Taylor arrived in Leyte as part of Gen. MacArthur's technical team, he had to ask about the gruesome sight he saw in the street. He was a Cryptographic Technician in the Navy but his rating was "Electrician." Lyman Taylor had to explain this when he got in theater and they put him in an engine room aboard ship. (5:18)

Mac Armstrong

Mac Armstrong tells of his upbringing in Louisiana and his decision to join the ROTC at Louisiana State University. While stationed on the West Coast, a comical series of events led him to meet his wife. (6:57)

Mac Armstrong remembers time during training as they prepared to go over to Vietnam. While flying over the jungle, Armstrong and his partner had a hairy encounter that was resolved by some quick thinking on his part. (11:07)

While managing equipment in the Air Force, there are a multitude of things that can go wrong with the various aircrafts. Learning from these mistakes was essential for them in going forward. (10:19)

Mac Armstrong recalls his time working in the Pentagon during Desert Storm and some of the decisions that they had to make. Having to navigate the intricacies of the Middle East during that time period was difficult but Armstrong and his team but they did an efficient job. (7:52)

A Chinese soldier managed to return an Air Force Class Ring back to the family of the fallen soldier, Pat Wynne, who Mac Armstrong knew from his time in Vietnam. This gave them closure on how he passed while flying over North Vietnam. (3:27)

Mac Armstrong took certain things away from the Vietnam War. The shortcomings that the U.S. faced during this conflict helped to inform future conflicts that we were involved in. (4:38)

Mac Armstrong took plenty away from the mistakes made during the Vietnam War. These are the lessons that he implemented while in the Pentagon during Operation Desert Storm. (3:49)
