He thought he would be going to Korea when he was drafted, but after basic training, tank driver Donald Andrejzwski was sent to Germany. The Cold War was on and it was feared Russian troops would come swarming over the border. (5:23)

The Cold War was a different kind of war in Europe. The job of a tank driver like Donald Andrezjwski was to just be there, battle ready. The locals in the town loved the Americans for being there and the soldiers loved not being shot at and having access to girls. The upside was the fun leave time and trips to Paris, but the serious business of deterrence came first. (5:18)

He served in Germany during the Cold War, but when he got home, Donald Andrezjwski found resistance at the American Legion because he had not seen combat. That didn't sit well with the Cold War veteran tank driver. He had orders to Germany instead of Korea. That doesn't make him any less of a veteran. (4:03)

Donald Lorentz

Donald Lorentz remembers training for Vietnam as an older enlistee, at age 27. He remembers not getting much direction on why the war was being fought, which stuck with him. Departing for Vietnam was memorable, and when he arrived in Phan Rang he needed to stay alert due to the dangers they faced there. (5:26)

Donald Lorentz vividly remembers taking enemy fire from the Viet Cong in the hills surrounding their base. Forming relationships with the different nations' forces was essential to making things run smoothly. (5:55)

Keeping in touch with family was important to Donald Lorentz and his family. Additionally, he was able to keep up with the news from the home front which was in the middle of dramatic changes. (3:46)

Returning home after Vietnam, Donald Lorentz saw the effects of the anti-war movement back home. Reflecting on his time there, he realized that you can't always help where you get placed or what you do, but you have to do your best to deal with whatever happens. (6:08)

Donald Whipple

Young Donald Whipple had just read a book named They Were Expendable about PT Boat crews in the retreat from the Philippines. He was inspired to see if he could measure up to the heroics he read about, so he joined the Marines.
