Vietnam | 173rd Airborne Brigade, 503rd Infantry Regiment

Dale Ney never took a bullet in Vietnam but he did have an unfortunate encounter with a punji stick. Another constant fear was enemy Claymore mines. And as if all that wasn't bad enough, every bit of wildlife in the country seemed to be against you. (4:08)
Three or four Viet Cong could tie down an entire company with a well planned ambush and then just disappear. Snipers were a big problem, too, but Dale Ney quieted down a really annoying one with a disposable weapon meant for heavy armor. (6:53)
Combat in the rice paddies was a miserable and dangerous affair. It was wet and nasty with little cover. The mountain range near Vung Tau was no picnic, either, but as Dale Ney's unit conducted a sweep along it toward the sea, a remarkable sight called for a little unscheduled R&R. (4:18)

Dan Brogan remembers growing up with a desire to join the military ever since he was a kid. Going up through the ranks as a Marine was challenging but it landed him in a special recon battalion. (6:46)
After deploying to Saudi Arabia, Brogan and his recon battalion began work in the field, training for patrolling and amphibious reconnaissance. (8:20)
On one of Dan Brogan's missions, his recon battalion hiked into country and began facing some chemical fire. Having access to your gear is essential to staying safe out in the field. (6:14)
During an extended mission, Dan Brogan and his battalion came across all sorts of enemy combatants as they patrolled the desert. After a particularly hairy encounter, they joined up with another battalion to stay safe against potential threats. (6:29)
Dealing with explosives while in Saudi Arabia was risky for Brogan and his battalion. The chaos of everything going on around him at that time stands out to him today. (6:06)
