Upon completion of B-25 Bomber Training, Chapman Hale begins a trip to his duty station in China, Burma and India. He is assigned to the 341st Bomb Group. Flying the B-25 Bomber to his duty station with the 341st Bomb Group, Chapman Hale describes flying over the Himalayan Mountain range. He visits the Taj Mahal and tells about the precious jewels embedded into its facade. He also mentions a difficult crew member who drinks too much. (8:08)

Arriving at his duty station at the 341st Bomb Group, Chapman Hale is assigned to the 22nd Bomb Squadron. Chapman, discusses how poor food caused weight loss and diarrhea among the troops. (4:18)

Chapman Hale tells stories about some of his 50 missions bombing the Japanese in China. He describes a mission he flew over the Gulf of Tonkin. Out of a 4 plane formation, his plane was the only one to return. (6:58)

Chapman Hale describes bombing missions over China using low altitude tactics during bad weather. Dangers associated with low altitude bombing includes debris being thrown up and damaging the B-25 when the bombs detonate. (5:21)

After WW2 ends, Chapman Hale tells stories of coming home. He talks about the transport aircraft C-87 and C-46 that were used to fly soldiers home. He tells about a C-87 that hit a mountain and killed 29 of the 30 passengers on board. He remained in the Reserves and rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel. (6:08)

Charles Blumenthal

With the threat of war looming in the late 1930's Chuck Blumenthal enlists in the Army Air force. Shortly after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and achieving the rank of 1st Sargent, Chuck begins a trip to Australia zig-zagging all the way to avoid Japanese Submarines. Chuck was offered and accepted the opportunity to enroll in Officer Candidate School (OCS). (6:33)

Upon completing Officer Training School, Chuck Blumenthal is assigned to the 310 Bomb Wing and is stationed in New Guinea. The US build up to retake the Philippines from the Japanese is underway and stories of constant strafing and bombing by Jap planes takes its toll on US Forces. (7:10)

Stationed in the Philippines and preparing for the Okinawa Invasion, Chuck Blumenthal tells the story of his rescuing a downed pilot from burning wreckage and being awarded the Bronze Star. A tropical disease known as Jungle Rot over took Chuck that caused him to be returned state side to convalesce and ultimately discharged. (7:15)

After WWII ended, Chuck Blumenthal describes the difficulty of PTSD and how nightmares put stress on his marriage. The years following the war, Chuck was a farmer and a realtor, but finally he went back to school which led to him settling in Scottsdale, AZ. (3:55)
