Bob Wylie

It was an exotic post, the Pacific atoll Kwajalein. Bob Wylie was an air traffic controller and worked search and rescue as well at the Naval air station there. Then it was back to Georgia for advanced school and further grounding in VFR, Visual Flight Rules. He was assigned to the Philippines just as a massive buildup of forces began in Southeast Asia. Though he was an air traffic controller, Bob Wylie also worked as a loadmaster and navigator. Based in the Philippines, he supervised the cargo on a circuit around the various bases in Vietnam. The aircraft also ferried troops on R&R as well as the occasional chicken coop. (7:11)

Brad Snyder

Brad Snyder went from the Citadel into basic training, which was cut short by the Cuban Missile Crisis. The next stop was the 8th Armored Cavalry which had the only nuclear weapon in the Army's arsenal. Thankfully, that was never deployed during the first ever division versus division war games. (3:49)

The first thing that got his attention when he arrived in Vietnam was the smell, followed by the temperature, the humidity and the motor scooters. Assigned to advise a South Vietnamese armored unit, he was humbled when his counterpart was older, more experienced and had been to more armor schools in the states than he had. As for the Vietnamese people, he loved them and was proud to be helping. (6:15)

He was happy that he could get a hamburger at the American Compound, but the real happiness for ARVN advisor Brad Snyder came from helping the nuns and children at the orphanage near the compound. He got the Seabees to dig a well for them which meant they no longer had to carry water with baskets and poles. (4:08)
